Wedding etiquette for guests
A wedding is one of the most beautiful and important days in a couple's life. For the whole day to go smoothly, in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere and without misunderstandings, it helps to keep a few basic rules of wedding etiquette in mind.
Číst česky →Following these simple guidelines will help the newlyweds experience their dream day exactly as they planned it, and it will let you enjoy the celebration without worrying about an unwanted faux pas.
Outfits and colors
Choosing the right outfit is often the biggest challenge for wedding guests. The basic rule still stands: on this day, white belongs to the bride alone. No other woman should arrive in a white dress and draw the attention that belongs to the bride.
It's also wise to be careful with an all-black outfit. In Czech culture, black is the color of mourning and grief, so an all-black outfit can look out of place at a wedding, as if you didn't wish the couple well. If you choose black trousers or a black skirt, soften them with a colorful top, and women can break up the overall look with brightly colored accessories.
If the couple asks for a dress code or a specific color palette in the invitation, try to accommodate them as best you can. You don't need to rush out and buy a new outfit in the exact shade; it's enough to get close to the color or work it tastefully into your accessories, such as jewelry, a handbag or a jacket. A great way to look elegant and put-together is subtle coordination as a couple. A man doesn't need a suit in the color of his partner's dress; accessories in a matching shade, such as a coordinated tie, bow tie or pocket square, are plenty.
Our tip: You can find a wide range of quality menswear accessories for weddings from Czech brands, too. From our own experience, we recommend the online stores vKošili and Avantgard.
Planning, punctuality and behavior at the ceremony
The organizational side matters just as much. The couple needs to know the final number of guests for the seating chart, the catering and the wedding favors, so reply to the invitation in time, no later than the RSVP date. Then arrive at the ceremony with plenty of time to spare, ideally at least 30 minutes before it begins. This gives you time to greet the other guests in peace, get ready and find your seat, because arriving late and interrupting the start of the ceremony causes the couple needless stress.
During the ceremony and the reception that follows (especially during the speeches), remember to switch your phone off or at least to silent mode. A loud ringtone in the middle of the vows can spoil a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Also be very careful about sharing photos on social media. Respect the privacy of the newlyweds and the other guests, and don't post any pictures without their explicit consent. Some couples want to share their photos first, and others prefer to enjoy their wedding day privately, away from the online world.
Wedding gifts and the reception
If you are bringing the newlyweds a gift or an envelope with a cash contribution, leave it without drawing attention to it in the designated place, such as a gift table or a card box, which the witnesses or the wedding planner will point out to you.
At the reception, don't sit down to eat whenever you please; wait for the signal to start, given by the couple or the wedding planner. It is customary to start eating only after the toasts and speeches.
In closing
Wedding etiquette is not a set of strict prohibitions meant to stop you from having fun; it's a guide that helps everyone feel at ease. Every detail, from replying on time and choosing a considerate outfit to respecting the couple's privacy on social media, is a sign of your respect and love for the people who invited you to celebrate one of the most important steps of their lives. Your presence, your smile and your thoughtfulness are the greatest gift for the newlyweds, one they will remember long after the last song of the night has played.
